Why Homemade Dog Treats?
For many reasons, homemade dog treats are an excellent option for your pet.
- They are perfect for pets with allergies or food sensitivities.
- You can eliminate artificial preservatives and any additives.
- The food is not highly processed, resulting in better nutritional value.
- You know exactly what is in the food and precisely what your pet is eating.
How To Preserve Homemade Dog Food
Making larger batches of these recipes is a great way to work ahead and have delightful treats and snacks ready for your pet. Split the recipe into individual portions and package them in ziplock bags. Stash them away in your freezer to save for another day. Easy for you, tasty for your pet!
Recipe One: Frozen Banana Bites
For this recipe you’ll need:
- 2 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter (Must be Xylitol free!)
- 4 Cups of Plain Yogurt
- 3 Ripe Bananas, Peeled and Mashed
Directions: Blend all ingredients in a bowl. You can use a blender to save time. Pour into small plastic shot cups. To get creative, use ice cube trays or kid’s popsicle molds. Freeze until firm. Serve to your pet. Watch them enjoy!
This recipe will make approximately eight one-ounce treats and can be frozen for up to 2 weeks.
Recipe Two: Dog Biscuits
Ingredients:
- 2 Cups of Organic Wheat Flour
- 2 Jars of Pureed Baby Food*
Knead ingredients together. Roll out and cut into your favorite shapes and designs.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool and serve!
Safe Baby Food Flavors
*Not all baby food flavors are safe for your pet. Avoid baby foods with ingredients including avocadoes, citrus, garlic or onion powder, grapes, or artificial sweeteners. Baby food made from beef, turkey, or chicken is excellent. Acceptable fruit flavors include berries, apples, and bananas. Sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, peas, zucchini, and green beans are safe vegetable varieties for your pet.
Recipe Three: Grain-Free Jerky Strips
You’ll Need:
- 2 to 4 boneless, 3-oz skinless chicken breasts
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.
- Trim all the extra fat off of the chicken breasts.
- Cut the meat into 1/8-inch thick strips using a sharp paring knife.
- Bake on a baking sheet for two hours until the strips are dry and hard.
- Cool completely.
- Watch your pet enjoy!
Makes approximately 10-20 strips.
Recipe Four: Sweet Potato Coins
Gather these ingredients:
- Two sweet potatoes
- 1 Tablespoon ground turmeric
- 1 ½ tablespoons coconut oil
Directions: Wash potatoes and cut into ¼ inch coins. (You don’t want them to be thinner, or they’ll turn into a crisp chip.) In a medium bowl, melt the coconut oil. When melted, add the sweet potatoes and turmeric. Toss everything until well coated. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the slices on the tray in a single layer. Roast at 200 degrees for two or three hours or until the coins become dehydrated and chewy. Cool and serve in your pet’s raised dog feeder.
Note: the turmeric might turn your fingers slightly yellow, but your dog’s pure enjoyment will make it worth it!
It is good for up to three weeks in the refrigerator.
That’s the scoop!
We hope you enjoyed these dog food treat recipes and have new inspiration for what to serve your pet in their raised dog feeder.
